The Interdiocesan Environment Commission is holding a Public Lecture and debate in Gozo by Prof. José Carlos De Miranda on Saturday 16 February 2019, 9.00am, at the Sacred Heart Seminary, Victoria, Gozo. Prof De Miranda will be treating the subject of rights, freedoms and responsibilities towards the environment in the light of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’.

Moral and Ecological Significance of Laudato Si’

 

 

The following is a Synopsis of the talk:

 

Having been told that he had failed the exam, a student who had skipped lessons justified his failure by saying to me, “It all started when my dad bought me the car. A wretched moment indeed!”

 

Is the Bible the cause of the ecological problem? In fact it all started when the Bible states that “dominion” on the Earth had been granted to man. A wretched moment?

 

The Encyclical Laudato Si’ is a call for humanity to shoulder moral responsibility without renouncing to the prerogatives of Personhood. For this to come about, humanity has to accept the reality of being part of Creation.

Prof De Miranda (b. 1961) holds a PhD in Theology (Instituto Patristico Augustinianum, Rome) and Philosophy (University of Lisbon). He is Professor at the Portuguese Catholic University (Braga) where he has taught Anthropology, Ethics and History of Religions. As a researcher, he currently collaborates with the Center of Philosophy (University of Lisbon) in the project De Restitutione, coordinating the edition of unpublished Latin manuscripts of the Renaissance masters of the Universities of Coimbra and Évora, in whose theories about dominium he finds valid assumptions for contemporary environmental ethics.

BIL-KWADRU TAL-MADONNA TA’ PINU


Għeżież ħuti,

Fil-jiem li għaddew għexna mumenti sbieħ ħafna meta l-Kwadru tal-Madonna Ta’ Pinu wasal f’xi wħud mill-parroċċi tagħna u rajna żgħar u kbar jifirħu madwar Ommna Marija. Għalkemm it-temp xitwi u kienu ġranet ferjali, il-poplu ma beżax jilqa lil Marija għandu.

F’dan il-mument storiku għad-Djoċesi tagħna, ħafna semgħu għall-ewwel darba tagħrif dwar l-istorja tas-Santwarju Ta’ Pinu u l-esperjenza li Karmni Grima u Franġisk Portelli kellhom tal-Verġni Mbierka fl-1883. Fl-istess waqt, ħafna approfittaw mill-fatt li l-Madonna Ta’ Pinu kienet daqshekk qrib tagħhom, resqu lejha u fetħu qalbhom magħha. Min jista jgħid x’għadda f’dawn il-jiem bejn id-devoti u Marija, xi ntqal f’widnejha, xi tqiegħed taħt ħarsitha kollha mħabba, u liema sigrieti ġew imqiegħda fil-qalb materna tagħha! Kien ta’ faraġ kbir għalina nosservaw li l-preżenza ta’ Marija qanqlet ħafna biex isibu ħin jitolbu quddiem Ġesù Ewkaristija, jieħdu sehem fil-quddiesa, jgħidu r-Rużarju, jippreżentaw it-trabi lill-Madonna, jersqu għas-sagramenti tal-Qrar u tad-Dilka tal-Morda, u jagħmlu karità. Il-waqfa qasira tal-Kwadru fl-Isptar Ġenerali kellha tifsira qawwija għal dawk li bħalissa għaddejjin mill-prova tal-mard. Continue reading >>
