Media Release from the Australian High Commisioner

The Australian High Commissioner, Her Excellency Anne Quinane, is pleased to announce the High Commission’s participation in two upcoming media events at Dar l-Emigrant.

On  Wednesday 13 October  at  10.00am  the High Commissioner has agreed to deliver a few remarks at a media conference at Dar l-Emigrant on the subject of the canonisation of Australia’s first saint, Mother Mary Mackillop. The canonisation will take place at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome on Sunday 17 October. At the initiative of the Friends of Australia Association in Malta, the canonisation will be marked at the usual 9.15am Sunday mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral in Malta. The High Commissioner will attend the mass.

On  Monday 18 October  at a further media conference at Dar l-Emigrant at  10.30am  Her Excellency will present a set of four facsimile copies of bilateral treaties signed between Australia and Malta between 1948 and 1970 covering migration from Malta to Australia. The bound copies, printed on treaty parchment, were prepared by National Archives of Australia as a gift to the Emigration Museum.

These events underscore the close bond between Australia and Malta arising from migration and the resulting rich tapestry of government, community and family connections going in both directions.

These events are open to media representatives and all interested parties.
