Brief History

The Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco, as they are popularly called, is a Religious Family born of the heart of St. John Bosco and the creative fidelity of St. Mary Domenica Mazzarello.

Our story begins in Mornese (Northern Italy) with a group of young women, one of whom was St. Mary Domenica Mazzarello, who eventIfually became the Mother General of the New Congretption founded by St. John Bosco. 1872 was the year of the first profession of fifteen young women. The aim of the Congregation is to work with young girls, particularly with the poor and disadvantaged.

In a vision of the future college surrounded by a large crowd of girls, St. Mary Domenica heard a voice saying, “I I entrust them to you.” This is the mandate given to each Salesian sister as she walks along with young people toward God.

“Religion, reason and loving kindness” is the characteristic of the Preventive System, the Salesian Spirituality, the heritage left to the Salesian Congregations by St. John Bosco.

The Salesian Sisters began their ministry in Victoria, 20 Republic Street, Gozo, in 1963, with MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS ORATORY. In 1966 they opened their house built by their munificent benefactress, Ms. Olimpia Bondi’, in Għasri, dedicated to Blessed Laura Vicuña as an aspirantate. At the same time they opened a Kinder, later on moved to Victoria. Eventually they opened a primary school.

The Sisters help in the ministry of catechesis, accompanying children in their christian formation for the reception of the Sacraments. Every Friday, a group of adolescents meet in Victoria, known as “the Don Bosco Club”. The Sisters offer their service to the Local Church, especially in the ministry to youth.

The community is comprised of seven sisters, animated by Sr. Carmelina Quaglia. Fr. George Borg is the community chaplain. The chapel is opened to the public, daily Mass being at 17.00 hrs and Sunday Mass at 10.00 hrs., and for adoration every first Friday at 16.00 hrs.

The Salesian Sisters are actively involved in the education of youth. They have a kindergarten and a primary school. The Head of the Primary School is Sr. Antoinette Pace. The School and Kinder have a population of 211 pupils.
