Last Sunday 24 February 2008, H.L. Mgr Mario Grech, bishop of Gozo, conferred the ministry of Lectorate on four seminarians who are in their fifth year of formation at the Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Victoria.
Francesco Pio Attard and Simon M. Cachia, from St George’s parish, Noel Debono from Nadur parish, and Maximillian Grech from the Assumption Cathedral parish, were given the Church’s mandate to proclaim the Word of God in the liturgical action of the Catholic Church, now as official readers at Mass. The homily of Mgr Grech, who was accompanied by over twenty priests from different parishes for a solemn concelebration which took place at the collegiate basilica of Għarb, at 16:00hrs, was inspired by the gospel reading for the third Sunday of Lent.
Like the Samaritan woman of the Gospel, who satisfied her spiritual thirst when listening to the Word of the Son of God, many today seek an answer for their lives which only Jesus Christ can give. Bishop Grech urged the four new lectors to make theirs the Saviour’s mission as the true Well of life-giving water.
The small but lovely baroque church, dedicated to Our Lady’s Visitation, was packed with family members and friends, including groups from the various parishes, for the celebration that lasted for over an hour.
